In September 2024, I had the chance to be one of the judges for the Youth Macclesfield Photography Competition, and it’s still one of the highlights of my year.

The event took place at Macclesfield Library and brought together an amazing mix of people from across the community — including the Mayor’s wife and other local creatives. I was genuinely proud (and a bit nervous!) to be asked to join the judging panel, especially being alongside such respected names.
It felt special to be part of something rooted in the town I’ve grown up in, and to give something back by helping to encourage young photographers who are just starting to find their voice.
Looking through the entries, I was so impressed by the range of styles and ideas. Some images were playful, others thoughtful or powerful, but each one had something to say. Judging them wasn’t easy. I kept asking myself: Does this image make me feel something? Would I remember it in a few days? Those are the things I look for in my own work too.
The best part was seeing how proud the winners were. The smiles, the conversations, the feeling of being part of something positive and creative in the town, it stayed with me long after the event.
Being part of the Macclesfield creative scene is something I really value, and this experience reminded me why I love photography so much, it brings people together.
Thanks again to everyone who made the event happen.
